American Protege International Music Competitions at Carnegie Hall

International Competition of Romantic Music 2014

The American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music is open to instrumentalists (piano, piano duo, winds, strings, chamber orchestras, voice) of all nationalities and countries. Participants are required to submit video/audio recording materials for the audition.

American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music 2014 attracted applicants from across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy, Bulgaria, Russia, Korea, China, Singapore, Thailand and Australia.

Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 7:30 PM at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Special prizes for best performances were awarded based on the judges’ recommendations.

Four qualified judges will evaluate audition materials. All judges are independent; their students are not allowed to apply this season.

Dr. Sophya Genis is invited as a Chairwoman of the Competition 2014. A graduate of the Moscow Gnessin Academy of Music, Mrs. Genis holds a Doctor of Music Arts Degree. She studied piano with such renowned professors as Alexander Yoheles, Yakov Milstein and Yakov Zak.

Emmie Guo, 6, from Chicago, IL, began piano studies with Sueanne Metz at age 4 and a half. During the past 19 months, little Emmie won first place awards for the 2013 Solo and Duet Programs at Granquist Competition in Geneva IL, the 2013 CAMTA Sonata Festival in Chicago IL, and the 2014 Piano Talent International Competition in Milan Italy. In June 2014, Emmie won 1st place in one of the renown competitions and was invited to perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Emmie performs regularly at senior homes, shopping malls, and libraries. Among other interests, Emmie enjoys reading, ice-skating, swimming, and playing with her little sister Ivanka.

At the age of 6, Erica Hong, 13-year-old from Duluth, Georgia, began to play piano and entered her first competition, the North Fulton Music Teachers Association, in 2009 and received a Superior Ranking and consecutively received the award of Outstanding Performance from 2010 to 2014. She earned the Superior Ranking award in 2010, 2011, and 2012 from the National Federation of Music Clubs. In 2010, she was given the Outstanding Performer award at the Bach Competition. She won Gold Prize at the Georgia Christian University Music Competition in 2013. Erica tried out for the Georgia Music Educators Association, or All-State, in both 6th and 7th grade and won the title of Master Class winner in 2013 and the title of Conference Recitalist in 2014. She also entered GMTA and won outstanding performance in 5th grade, award of excellence in 6th, and 1st place as the Conference Recitalist and Outstanding performer in 7th grade.

Golda Berkman, 15 year old soprano, made her professional concert debut with Maestro Daniel Suk and the Dream Orchestra at Irvine Barclay Theatre earlier this year – 2014 with leading female pianist Hai-Kyung Suh. Ms. Berkman has performed with L.A. Opera’s productions of “Noye’s Fludde” by Benjamin Britten, and “Brundibar” by Hans Krasa. Golda also performed from George Gerswin’s “Porgy and Bess” at The Centennial Gala Celebration for The City of Beverly Hills with other celebrities including Betty White, Florence Henderson, and composer Richard Sherman. Golda debuted again on April 28, 2014 as the soprano soloist alongside Tenor Vladimir Dmitruk and Mezzo-Soprano Cassandra Velascos of LA OPERA Domingo Thorton Young Artist Program, and professional Bass Patrick Blackwell for a world class production of Mozart’s Requiem.

Ila Shon,17, began her cello studies at age six with Sieun Lin in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-college Division. Ila has been a student in the Perlman Music Program’s Summer Music School in New York and in Florida since 2011, where she receives instructions from Ron Leonard and Paul Katz. Ila has performed in master classes with Yo-Yo Ma, Laurence Lesser, David Finckel, Hans Jorgen Jensen, Paul Watkins and the Pacifica String Quartet among others. Ila has won First Prize in the Pacific Musical Society Centennial Competition, the Korea Times Young Artist Competition, the Felix Khuner Young Artist Competition, the Diablo Valley College Young Artist Competition, the International Strings Competition, and the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition.
